End The Occupation

FALL 2022 / PRINT

Tasked with choosing a social issue and designing an icon that is successful at both very small and very large sizes, I chose to focus on the Israeli occupation in Palestine. This icon was then used to design a poster using only three colors.

The olive branch is a universal symbol of peace and hope, as well as a symbol of resistance and resilience in Palestine. The barbed wire is meant to represent the oppression that Palestinians have faced for decades. Big, bold typography represents the urgency of the situation, and a modern sans serif typeface was chosen to represent how 'modern' the issue of colonialism is - it's not just a problem of the distant past, as it's sometimes made out to be.

As a Jewish person, I wanted to express my solidarity with the Palestinian people while also also distancing myself from the Zionism movement, which is often seen as intrinsic to Judaism.
